Because the Quarterly Group Buy contains the Omega Vert Juicer, I’ve had many people ask me, “What’s the difference between blending and juicing?” I’ve also heard people say, “Oh, I don’t need a juicer, I have a Vita-Mix.” So I decided to do some research and find out exactly what the difference is between a blender and a juicer.
Basically, what it boils down to is fiber and nutrient availability.
When you blend fruits and vegetables you get the juice and the fiber. It’s really just like drinking pre-chewed food, and I’ve even read that it’s beneficial to help with the digestion of your smoothie if you chew threw it to activate the secretion of digestive juices. While there are nutrients in the fiber, they are “locked in” the fiber and they are not readily available to our body. An article that I ready by Dr. Christopher quoted a study by Dr. Norman Walker and stated, if our digestive system is good, we only absorb 30% of the nutrients in the fruits and vegetables and our body uses a lot of energy digesting the fiber.
When you juice fruits and vegetables all you get is the juice, also called the “life-blood” of the plant. Because there isn’t any fiber for the body to digest, the nutrients from the juice are able to be immediately assimilated into our system. The same article by Dr. Christopher said, “When we juice the same fruits and vegetables we absorb 90% of the nutrients and it is absorbed into the bloodstream within minutes.”
The big difference it seems is that blending is more about “feeding” where juicing is more about “healing.”
My main reason for wanting a juicer is because I want to eat more fruits and vegetables throughout the day. I’ll still have my kefir smoothie for breakfast and my purple cow for lunch and dinner, but in between meals I can have a class of juice and benefit from the boost of added nutrients. Plus, the glass of juice will contain the nutrient content of 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables that would be impossible for me to eat between meals.
There is a lot of information on juice fasts, and I supposed at some time I may do a fast. But the “proof in the pudding” of the healing ability of juicing is that on a juice fast there is the potential for a healing crisis because of the detoxification of the body. That doesn’t happen when you’re blending.
So, for me, juicing will allow me to supplement my diet with the additional nutrients from raw fruits, vegetables, and wheatgrass (the health benefits of wheatgrass is a whole other article 🙂 ) without having to eat them and without my body having to work to digest them.
I’m including the links to some of the articles I read in case you want to do more research for yourself. I’ll be collecting orders for the Quarterly Group Buy through this Saturday and placing the orders next week. If you’re interested in ordering the Omega Vert Juicer, just send me the order form and your check. Be sure to include your contact information so I can let you know when the juicers arrive.
